“In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobendience,” (Ephesians 2:2)

Dear People Who Keep Company with God,

In the gospels Jesus often spoke about the fallen world, the devil, and our relationship to them. Here, Paul is telling the Ephesians that in their past they walked according to the ways of this world. Years ago, I had a vision of where the course of the world was taking people. I caught sight of an increasing unrest and violence in the streets of our nation and a divisive spirit infiltrating professional sports. I saw winds of faulty doctrine, trendy philosophy, and lies leading many away from the ways of the Lord. The good news is I saw those who had the glory of the King resting on them, and they became a sought-out people. Darkness is covering the earth, but the Lord and His glory will arise upon you (see Isaiah 60:1-3). I have never been one to give the devil much attention, but I am not sticking my head in the ground when it comes to his schemes. Although Jesus thoroughly defeated the devil at the cross, the defeated enemy still goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. In this one verse, Paul gives insight into the nature of the devil and how he works. It is revelation for discerning the enemy’s schemes.

There are two times the phrase “according to” is used. This phrase refers to something that is dominating, manipulating and controlling. The first time it is used in conjunction with “the course of this world.” The course, or way, of the world has the meaning of current or flow. It is like an unseen undertow, a subtle, but powerful current that runs counter to the will and the ways of God. It flows in society, fashion, trends, and philosophy. It means people are being manipulated and controlled by the media, educational systems, religion, business and governments of the present generation and culture. Not everything that comes from these places is evil, but evil is flowing in it. Truth gets lost in it. The second use of “according to” is used concerning the devil and how he insidiously works behind the scenes dominating, manipulating and controlling society which in turn exerts itself upon humanity. Paul tells us four important facts about the devil. First, he is a prince and has a kingdom. Jesus referred to him as the “ruler of this world.” Second, he has real power to back up his kingdom. While being tempted in the wilderness, Jesus never disputed Satan’s claim to power, but he does not have legal power over us, unless we give it to him by believing his lies. It is over the world system and those who are a part of it that Satan has power. To the degree, we hold to the values of the world, to that same degree we are vulnerable to the devil’s influence. Third, his power is in the air, the world we live in. Lastly, the devil is a spirit. He lives in a spiritual world, but he exercises control in the natural world. So be on the alert and discerning. You are an overcomer, and the devil is not. Christ, the Hope of glory in you will arise and wage warfare through you.

Many Blessings, BW
