Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Dear People Who Keep Company with God,

At the beginning of the year, I look forward to hearing from God, spending time seeking Him, and asking Him for direction for the new year. The Holy Spirit often gives me a Scripture, word, or picture when I do this. As I prayed this year, Psalm 19:14 came to my mind. Psalm 19 is about God’s revelation of Himself to humanity. It begins with, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork.” The first six verses speak about the revelation of God in nature. Although we may not always be aware of it, God reveals Himself through the heavens and earth. It says in verse 2, “Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.” There is not a day that goes by, nor is there a place on earth, where God does not offer Himself to all humanity.

Verse 3 contains insight into how God reveals Himself through the created world, “There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard.” The speech and knowledge of the Lord, which pours forth day and night, is visual, not verbal. It is wordless words, speechless speech, and voiceless voices. The Apostle Paul clarified this when he told the people of Lystra, “God has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” (Acts 14:17). God made the world and everything in it not only to reveal His glory but also to show His kindness, grace, and blessings to people.

In verse 7, the Psalm’s focus shifts from the visible creation to the word of the Lord. First, God created by His Word, and then He wrote His word down so we could get to know Him through it. Without a doubt, there is no power on earth like God’s word. When He spoke, creation came forth, and when He speaks to us, His design comes forth in us. His word not only creates, but it separates and judges; it goes deeper into our hearts than we can go ourselves. It performs surgery on the depths of our thoughts and intentions (Hebrews 4:12). His word is a never-ending fountain of healing, deliverance, and restoration (Psalm 107:20).

We are in the Hebrew decade 5780-5789, corresponding to 2020-2029, represented by the Hebrew letter Pey. As the season of Pey, this decade emphasizes the mouth, what we speak, give voice to, and declare. It is time to be fortified in the Scriptures and learn to think and give voice to the word of the Lord. If Jesus, who was the Word of God, had to take His stand on “it is written,” how much more must we? “Blessed is the man who listens to Me.” (Proverbs 8:34). Our lives depend on whom we listen to. The words spoken through the Scripture and the Holy Spirit can become so much a part of us that all other voices fade into the background. Now is the time to tune our ears to the voice of the Lord. We must seek to heed His words, for in them is life; a life lived more abundantly.

Many Blessings, BW
